Recycling Oil to Help the Environment Makes Cents
From News 14 Carolina:
Greensboro-based restaurant is recycling its used vegetable oil and filling up the tanks in their trucks.
Officials at Libby Hill say the oil from all of their 11-area locations will be collected for recycling by Patriot Diesel, another Greensboro-based company. A portion of that refined oil will then go back to the restaurant, saving them money at the pump.
“We estimate that we are going to be able to save about a third of our fuel cost by taking what was essentially a waste product, partnering with Patriot Biodiesel and allowing them to render that into fuel that we will in turn use in our trucks,” explained Justin Conrad, President of Libby Hill Seafood Restaurant.
The seafood restaurant goes through more than 800,000 pounds of vegetable oil each year, leaving a large portion of that to be disposed of. That's why Conrad says refining the leftover oil is such a good fit.
“Companies are being very creative now about ways they can cut cost and at the same time be a good environmental steward,” Conrad said. “And take what is essentially waste and turn it into a usable fuel.”
With 11-area restaurants and six diesel trucks, Conrad says the company will notice the difference. “We go through about 600 gallons of fuel each month in delivering to those restaurants,” he said. “Right now on the conservative end we're estimating we're going to save 200 and 300 gallons of fuel.”
The idea of being greener has their customers excited too. “I think it's wonderful that a group like Libby Hill will take the initiative to go forward with this environmental processing and if they can use this oil to a better use, I say go with it,” said customer Louise Pinkelton-Hofer.
“And for us to be able to save money and not have to pass those costs onto the customer, everybody wins in that aspect,” Conrad pointed out. Patriot Biodiesel will begin refining the fuel sometime in August, but in the meantime, they're already collecting Libby Hill's waste vegetable oil. For every five gallons of waste oil Libby Hill gives to Patriot Biodiesel, the restaurant will get one gallon back in B-100 pure biodiesel. Links: http://www.wxii12.com/money/16709701/detail.html
